Delapan jenis makanan berpotensi 90 persen sebabkan alergi pada anak-anak usia sekolah. Hasil temuan ini diungkapkan oleh para ilmuwan di Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. Delapan jenis makanan tersebut diantaranya kacang, kerang, ikan, buah kacang (kenari, kemiri, mede, almond), telur, susu, kedelai dan gandum.
Salah satu ilmuwan dalam studi ini, Leonard Bacharie mengatakan reaksi terhadap gejala alergi bisaberagam dari mulai tingkat ringan hingga yang paling parah, demikian yang dilansir dari Times of India, Rabu (22/4/2009).
Namun kabar baiknya, alergi pada anak-anak yang disebabkan konsumsi susu, kedelai, telur dan gandum lambat laun akan hilang dengan sendirinya seiring pertumbuhan mereka.
Alergi terhadap makanan terjadi ketika sistem kekebalan tubuh menafsirkan makanan yang dikonsumsi sebagai sesuatu yang dapat membahayakan tubuh, sehingga yang terjadi sistem kekebalan berupaya menangkisnya dengan respon negatif.
Proses ini akan mempengaruhi berbagai sistem pada tubuh, termasuk kulit, sistem pernafasan, gastrointestinal, dan sistem kardiovaskular.
Menurutnya para peneliti, alergi tingkat tinggi bisa sampai menyebabkan kulit gatal dan kemerahan, eczema, bengkak pada bibir, lidah atau tenggorokan. Lebih parahnya lagi bisa saja respon alergi menyebabkan sesak nafas, batuk, mual dan muntah, menurunnya tekanan darah dan lain sebagainya.
Oleh karenanya Bacharie sangat menyarankan agar kita berhati-hati dalam mengkonsumsi makanan. “Para orangtua dan anak-anak yang alergi terhadap makanan harus teliti memeriksa bahan-bahan yang terkandung dalam label makanan,” ujar Bacharie.
