Menurut Sudarman Mardisiswojo dalam buku Cabe Puyang Warisan Nenek Moyang, tanaman yang di Manado bernama ketimun jepang ini, buahnya mengandung vitamin A, B, C, niasin, dan sedikit albuminoid. Karena bersifat dingin, jika dimakan terasa sejuk dan dingin di perut.
Dr Setiawan Dalimartha, Ketua II PDPKT (Perhimpunan Dokter Indonesia Pengembang Kesehatan Tradisional Timur), menyebut daging buahnya terdiri dari 90 persen air, 7,5 persen karbohidrat, 1 persen protein, 0,6 persen serat, 0,2 persen abu, dan 0,1 persen lemak. Juga mengandung sekitar 20 mg kalsium, 25 mg fosfor, 100 mg kalium, 0,3 mg zat besi, 2 mg natrium, serta beberapa zat kimia yang berkhasiat obat.
"Buahnya mengandung zat saponin, alkaloid, dan tannin. Daunnya mengandung saponin, flavonoid, dan polifenol," kata Dr Setiawan.
Dalam buku Cabe Puyang Warisan Nenek Moyang, Sudarman hanya menjelaskan bahwa buah tanaman ini baik untuk menyembuhkan gangguan sariawan, panas dalam, serta menurunkan demam pada anak-anak karena mengandung banyak air.
Maksudnya, tidak ada penjelasan kandungan mana yang bisa meredakan darah tinggi.
Dr Setiawan menduga, selain bersifat diuretik (peluruh air seni), kandungan alkoloidnya juga bisa membuka pembuluh darah yang tersumbat. Oleh sebab itulah, labu siam bisa menurunkan darah tinggi.
Seperti diketahui, melalui air seni yang banyak terbuang akibat sifat diuretik dari labu siam, kandungan garam di dalam darah pun ikut berkurang. Berkurangnya kadar garam yang bersifat menyerap atau menahan air ini akan meringankan kerja jantung dalam memompa darah sehingga tekanan darah akan menurun.
Sementara itu, R Broto Sudibyo, Ketua Sentra Pengembangan dan Penerapan Pengobatan Tradisional Yogyakarta, menyarankan pasien dengan gangguan asam urat di Klinik Obat Tradisional RS Bethesda, Yogyakarta, mengonsumsi labu siam. Menurut dia, air labu siam memiliki efek diuretik yang baik sehingga melancarkan buang air kecil. Dengan begitu, kelebihan asam urat bisa segera dikeluarkan dari dalam tubuh.
Selain penderita asam urat, R Broto menjelaskan, penderita kencing manis juga cocok mengonsumsi labu siam yang telah dikukus. Kandungan patinya mengenyangkan sehingga penderita diabetes melitus tak lagi mengonsumsi makanan pokok secara berlebihan.
Namun, R Broto mengingatkan, ramuan labu siam tak cocok diberikan kepada penderita rematik lantaran sifat dinginnya malah memicu munculnya gejala sakit.
